HSI PILOT PROJECT: IMPROVING EXPERIENTIAL SKILLS FOR A DIVERSE SOFTWARE ENGINEERING WORKFORCE VIA PROJECT-BASED INTERNSHIPS -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS PROGRAM, THIS TRACK 1 PROJECT AIMS TO PREPARE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FOR CAREERS IN THE SOFTWARE INDUSTRY. SOFTWARE IS UTILIZED ACROSS THE ENTIRETY OF THE WORKFORCE AND THE DEMAND FOR QUALIFIED DEVELOPERS IS CONSTANTLY RISING. THIS POSES A SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE RECRUITMENT OF HISPANIC STUDENTS AND WOMEN WITH INTERESTS IN SOFTWARE CAREERS, AS THESE GROUPS HAVE HISTORICALLY BEEN UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE COMPUTING WORKFORCE. FURTHER, SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS OFTEN NEED TO COMPLETE ADDITIONAL ONLINE TRAINING TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN REPRESENT A CHALLENGE TO LOW-INCOME STUDENTS, WORKING INDIVIDUALS, AND OTHERS. THIS PROJECT AT GEORGIA GWINNETT COLLEGE (GGC), AN OPEN-ACCESS HSI, WILL ADDRESS THE NEED FOR A LARGER AND MORE DIVERSE TECHNICAL WORKFORCE AND PROVIDE RIGOROUS TRAINING THROUGH HIGH-QUALITY MENTORSHIP, LONG-TERM COLLABORATIONS WITH NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, AND PAID PROJECT-BASED INTERNSHIPS. THE ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES OF THIS PROJECT ARE: (A) INCREASED PRE- AND POST-GRADUATION SUCCESS AND IMPROVED REPRESENTATION OF LOW-INCOME AND UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS IN THE SOFTWARE WORKFORCE; (B) NEW KNOWLEDGE ABOUT EFFECTIVE APPROACHES FOR TRAINING STUDENTS ON REAL-WORLD SOFTWARE PROJECTS WITH REAL CLIENTS; AND (C) IMPROVED EFFICIENCY OF LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT SERVE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES. THE PROJECT WILL EXPLORE BEST PRACTICES FOR INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS THAT COMBINE SPECIALIZED TRAINING, MENTORING, AND IMPLEMENTATION AT COMMUNITY NONPROFITS. PROVIDING ENGAGING PATHWAYS TO BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN SOFTWARE CAREERS IS CRITICAL AS THE NEED FOR WELL-PREPARED SOFTWARE PROFESSIONALS CONTINUES TO GROW. AS A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION, GGC PROVIDES AN IDEAL CAMPUS TO HELP INCREASE POST-GRADUATION SUCCESS OF HISPANIC STUDENTS, LOW-INCOME STUDENTS, AND OTHERS. THE PROJECT AIMS TO ACHIEVE THIS BY (1) OFFERING INTERNSHIP POSITIONS, TRAINING, AND MENTORING TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS, ALLOWING THEM TO GAIN MARKETABLE SKILLS AS THEY ENGAGE IN AUTHENTIC, HIGH-IMPACT PROJECTS FOR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS; (2) FOSTERING A SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY AT GGC THAT INCLUDES ALUMNI AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS AND PROVIDES ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT; (3) DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO RECRUIT, ENGAGE, AND SUPPORT HISPANIC WOMEN IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCES, COURSES, AND DEGREE PROGRAMS; (4) CREATING SUSTAINABLE COLLABORATIONS WITH NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN LOCAL HISPANIC COMMUNITIES; AND (5) DISSEMINATING PROGRAM OUTCOMES NATIONALLY THROUGH A WEB GATEWAY, OPEN EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS, AND PUBLICATIONS. THIS PROJECT IS FUNDED BY THE HSI PROGRAM, WHICH AIMS TO ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION, BROADEN PARTICIPATION IN STEM, AND BUILD CAPACITY AT HSIS. A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO IMPROVE LEARNING AND MOTIVATION IN INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMING WITH AUTOMATED GRADING, WEB-BASED TEAM SUPPORT, AND GAME DEVELOPMENT -WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IMPROVING UNDERGRADUATE STEM EDUCATION: HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI PROGRAM), THIS TRACK 1 PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT SUCCESS IN AN INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMING COURSE WHICH IS A PIVOTAL COURSE WITHIN ALL COMPUTER SCIENCE/INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS. INCREASING THE SUCCESS RATES IN THIS COURSE, PARTICULARLY FOR STUDENTS FROM GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM, WILL REMOVE OBSTACLES FOR RETAINING STUDENTS IN AN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAREER PATHWAY. VARIOUS RESEARCH-BASED APPROACHES FOR IMPROVING THE COURSE OFTEN ENCOUNTER LOCAL CHALLENGES THAT LIMIT THEIR ADOPTION OR IMPLEMENTATION. THIS PROJECT WILL POTENTIALLY DEMONSTRATE THAT TECHNOLOGY AND AUTOMATED TOOLS CAN EFFECTIVELY MANAGE OR MITIGATE THESE CHALLENGES. THE APPROACH TO BE PILOTED IN THIS PROJECT INTEGRATES SEVERAL HIGH-IMPACT PRACTICES HOLISTICALLY, OFFERING STUDENTS MULTIPLE PATHWAYS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN. THIS MULTIFACETED APPROACH COULD HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SYNERGICALLY ENHANCE OVERALL STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES. THE SPECIFIC AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO ENHANCE THE LEARNING, SKILLS, AND TRAINING OF STUDENTS FROM GROUPS HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM IN INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMING COURSES. THE PROJECT WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS AIM BY (1) UTILIZING A MULTIFACETED APPROACH THAT INTEGRATES SEVERAL HIGH-IMPACT RESEARCH-SUPPORTED PEDAGOGIES FACILITATED BY AUTOMATED TOOLS, ACCOMMODATING DIVERSE LEARNING STYLES, (2) HIRING AND MENTORING A DIVERSE GROUP OF PEER TUTORS, WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON STUDENTS FROM GROUPS UNDERREPRESENTED IN THIS CADRE, AND PRODUCING A MINI-VIDEO LIBRARY TO FACILITATE LEARNING AND PRACTICE IN A GRAPHICAL PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT, WHICH WILL OFFER AN ADDITIONAL LEARNING PATHWAY AND SUSTAIN THE PEER MODELING EFFORT THROUGH VIDEOS, (3) CREATING A PROJECT-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCE THROUGH A SEMESTER-LONG GAME DEVELOPMENT PROJECT THAT INCORPORATE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE THEMES, (4) PRODUCING TANGIBLE CURRICULUM MATERIALS DESIGNED TO BE EASILY ADOPTED OR ADAPTED BY OTHER FACULTY OR INSTITUTIONS. AS A RESULT, THE RESEARCH OUTCOMES AND DEVELOPED TOOLS POTENTIALLY WILL BE APPLICABLE AND IMPACTFUL FOR A WIDE RANGE OF INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS, MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTIONS, AND THOSE ACCOMMODATING STUDENTS BALANCING EDUCATION WITH WORK AND FAMILY COMMITMENTS. AT GEORGIA GWINNETT COLLEGE (GGC), INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (ITEC) DEPARTMENT IS THE DEPARTMENT WITH THE LARGEST STUDENT POPULATION AND SHIFTS TOWARDS A MORE ETHNICALLY DIVERSE STUDENT BODY. AS THE PERCENTAGE OF HISPANIC, BLACK/AFRICAN AMERICAN, AND FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS INCREASES SIGNIFICANTLY, SO DOES THE NEED TO ADDRESS THE GAPS IN THEIR RETENTION AND GRADUATION RATES, WHICH ARE MUCH LOWER THAN THOSE OF WHITE AND ASIAN STUDENTS. HISPANIC AND OTHER UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS ENCOUNTER VARIOUS OBSTACLES THAT HINDER THEIR FULL ENGAGEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, SUCH AS LANGUAGE, SOCIAL, AND STRUCTURAL BARRIERS. TO OVERCOME THESE BARRIERS, THE PROJECT PROPOSES TO INTEGRATE THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN THE ITEC COURSES TO IMPROVE THE ACADEMIC OUTCOMES AND CAREER READINESS OF ITEC STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM HISPANIC AND UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. AGILE NOT ONLY HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED IN INDUSTRY PROJECTS, BUT ALSO HAS BEEN ADAPTED TO MANAGE CLASS PROJECTS AND LIFE PROJECTS. APPLYING AGILE WILL HELP STUDENTS TO BECOME MORE PRODUCTIVE, ORGANIZED, AND SATISFIED. THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF THE PROJECT ARE INCREASED STUDENT KNOWLEDGE ON AGILE, INCREASED STUDENT ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND IMPROVED STUDENT CAREER PREPARATION FOR AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT. THE SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO IMPROVE TEACHING AND LEARNING IN AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TO ENHANCE SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS, INCLUDING HISPANIC AND UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS, AND TO PROVIDE MENTORING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE PROJECT INCLUDES THE DEVELOPMENT OF INCLUSIVE AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TEACHING MATERIALS AND ASSISTING FACULTY IN CREATING AGILE INTEGRATED COURSE PROJECTS TO ENHANCE AGILE LEARNING, SO THAT STUDENTS CAN IMPROVE THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND BETTER BALANCE THEIR LIFE, STUDY, AND WORK. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO INCLUDE MENTORING ACTIVITIES FOR PARTICIPATING STUDENTS, PARTNERING WITH STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS TO HOST WORKSHOPS AND COMPETITIONS ON PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN AGILE PROJECTS IN INDUSTRY. THESE ACTIVITIES WILL HELP STUDENTS TO LEARN THE SKILLS OF A PROJECT MANAGER IN REAL LIFE, BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH PROJECT MANAGERS IN INDUSTRY, AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO PURSUE A CAREER AS A PROJECT MANAGER, WHICH MAY INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF THIS FIELD. THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES INCLUDE INCREASED ENROLLMENT, RETENTION, AND GRADUATION RATES, DEVELOPING A SKILLED WORKFORCE, AND PROMOTING EQUITY IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FIELDS. THE PROJECT TEAM WILL CONDUCT RESEARCH ON DETERMINING AND EVALUATING WHICH AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TEACHING METHODS AND PROJECT PROCEDURES ARE MOST SUITABLE FOR THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF THE LOW-INCOME, FIRST GENERATION, MINORITY, AND UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS. COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: CISE CORE SMALL: AF: SHEAF LAPLACIAN ON HYPERGRAPHS: FROM THEORY TO APPLICATIONS -HYPERGRAPHS PROVIDE A POWERFUL MATHEMATICAL FRAMEWORK FOR REPRESENTING COMPLEX SYSTEMS IN WHICH INTERACTIONS OCCUR NOT JUST BETWEEN PAIRS OF ENTITIES, BUT AMONG GROUPS. THIS ADVANCED REPRESENTATION IS PARTICULARLY VALUABLE FOR MODELING DIFFUSION, THE SPREAD OF INFORMATION OR BEHAVIORS, THROUGH COMPLEX SYSTEMS. DIFFUSION MODELS PLAY A KEY ROLE IN DIVERSE FIELDS SUCH AS BIOLOGY, SOCIAL SCIENCE, AND FINANCE. ON THE OTHER HAND, DIFFUSION ON NETWORKS IS A COMPLEX PROCESS WHERE, FOR EXAMPLE, USER CHARACTERISTICS MAY HAVE A STRONG EFFECT ON HOW THEY SHAPE AND SHARE THEIR OPINION. THESE FACTORS PLAY CRUCIAL ROLES IN SHAPING DIFFUSION PATTERNS AND NEED TO BE CONSIDERED IN MODELING. THE GOAL OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO DESIGN AND EXPLORE A NEW MATHEMATICAL TOOL, CALLED THE SHEAF LAPLACIAN, TO BETTER CAPTURE DIFFUSION DYNAMICS IN HYPERGRAPHS BY INCORPORATING DIFFERENT FACTORS LIKE INDIVIDUAL OPINIONS, COMMUNICATION STYLES, AND GROUP ROLES. THIS WILL ENABLE MORE FLEXIBLE AND ACCURATE ANALYSIS OF GROUP INTERACTIONS, WITH BROAD APPLICATIONS IN AREAS SUCH AS EXPERT DETECTION, COMMUNITY DECISION-MAKING, AND COLLABORATIVE INFORMATION FLOW. THIS PROJECT DEVELOPS AND APPLIES THE THEORY OF SHEAF LAPLACIANS ON HYPERGRAPHS TO ADDRESS CRITICAL CHALLENGES IN DIFFUSION MODELING, INFLUENCE MAXIMIZATION, AND REPRESENTATION LEARNING. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL FIRST DEFINE GENERALIZED SHEAF LAPLACIANS FOR NON-UNIFORM HYPERGRAPHS AND ESTABLISH THEIR KEY PROPERTIES, INCLUDING SPECTRAL CHARACTERISTICS, HARMONIC STATES, AND CURVATURE. THESE TOOLS WILL THEN BE USED TO MODEL COMPLEX, MULTI-VECTOR DIFFUSION PROCESSES THAT ACCOUNT FOR DIVERSE OPINION BASES AND COMMUNICATION PATHWAYS, SUCH AS IN EXPERT DETECTION ON BLOG FORUMS AND INFLUENCER SELECTION IN MARKETING. FINALLY, THE PROJECT WILL DESIGN NEW HYPERGRAPH NEURAL NETWORK ARCHITECTURES THAT INTEGRATE SHEAF-BASED DIFFUSION AND CURVATURE-AWARE AGGREGATION. BY ADVANCING BOTH THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS AND PRACTICAL ALGORITHMS, THIS WORK CONTRIBUTES TO THE GROWING BODY OF RESEARCH AT THE INTERSECTION OF ALGEBRAIC TOPOLOGY, DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY, NETWORK SCIENCE, AND MACHINE LEARNING AND OPENS NEW DIRECTIONS FOR ANALYZING HIGH-DIMENSIONAL RELATIONAL DATA.
