CONGRESSIONALLY RECOMMENDED AWARDS
THE ANDREW YOUNG CENTER AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROPOSES TO EXPAND ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION IN PRISONS AND PENITENTIARIES IN GEORGIA. THE PURPOSE IS TO EDUCATE, REHABILITATE, AND PREPARE INCARCERATED STUDENTS TO SUCCESSFULLY RETURN TO THEIR RESPECTIVE COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES. REDUCING THE RISK OF RECIDIVISM AND INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT FOR THE STUDENTS TAUGHT, ONCE RELEASED, ARE ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAM. PROJECT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE INCREASING THE NUMBER OF MOREHOUSE-ACCREDITED CLASSES OFFERED INSIDE PRISONS IN GEORGIA, ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF OUR ACADEMIC SUPPORT INSIDE TWO SITES, STRENGTHENING THE STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM AT MOREHOUSE, AND RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT MASS INCARCERATION AND THE BENEFITS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN PRISONS. THE PROJECT WILL DELIVER UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE CLASSES TO INCARCERATED MEN AND WOMEN IN FEDERAL AND STATE PRISONS; OFFER A PATHWAY TO A BA DEGREE INSIDE THE USFP; PROVIDE TRAINING TO FACULTY AND STUDENTS AT MOREHOUSE; EXPAND PUBLICATIONS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH; AND CONDUCT ONGOING PROGRAM ASSESSMENTS. BROADENING PARTICIPATION RESEARCH CENTER: HBCU STEM UNDERGRADUATE SUCCESS RESEARCH CENTER -BROADENING PARTICIPATION RESEARCH CENTERS PROVIDE SUPPORT TO HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (HBCUS) TO CONDUCT BROADENING PARTICIPATION RESEARCH AND SERVE AS NATIONAL HUBS FOR THE RIGOROUS STUDY AND BROAD DISSEMINATION OF THE CRITICAL THEORIES, STRUCTURES AND PEDAGOGIES, AS WELL AS CULTURALLY SENSITIVE INTERVENTIONS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF HBCUS IN EDUCATING AFRICAN AMERICAN STEM UNDERGRADUATES. THE PROJECT AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SPELMAN COLLEGE AND VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SEEKS TO FORMALLY ESTABLISH THE HBCU STEM UNDERGRADUATE SUCCESS RESEARCH CENTER ? STEM-US. THE MISSION OF THE CENTER IS TO ?UNDERSTAND AND TELL THE STORIES OF HBCUS THROUGH CONVERGENCE RESEARCH FOR US AND THE NATION; THEREBY, DOCUMENTING THE LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE IN STEM EDUCATION AT HBCUS AND CONTRIBUTING TO FUTURE EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION?. AMONG HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS, HBCUS HAVE A SUSTAINED RECORD OF CONSISTENTLY PRODUCING A DIVERSE GROUP OF GRADUATES IN THE STEM FIELDS WHO ARE PREPARED FOR FURTHER EDUCATION AND THE STEM WORKFORCE. THROUGH RESEARCH, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE BUILDING, AND OUTREACH, THIS CENTER WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON STEM EDUCATION REFORM AND BROADENING PARTICIPATION AT ALL HBCUS, BUT WILL ALSO ALLOW ALL OF HIGHER EDUCATION, AND THUS SOCIETY, TO BENEFIT FROM THE EXPERIENCE AND LESSONS OF HBCUS IN BROADENING PARTICIPATION. STEM-US WILL CONDUCT A SYSTEMATIC AND COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION TO ELUCIDATE HOW HBCUS WITH DIVERSE ACADEMIC CULTURES SUCCESSFULLY GRADUATE AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS AT A HIGHER RATE THAN OTHER INSTITUTIONS; PRODUCE A HIGHER RATE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STEM STUDENTS RECEIVING PHDS; AND INSTILL IN STUDENTS A GREATER SENSE OF WELL-BEING. STEM-US WILL TAKE A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH THAT INCLUDES: 1) A STRATEGY INTEGRATING RESEARCH, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER AND OUTREACH TO UNDERSTAND AND DISSEMINATE, AT LOCAL, STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS, THE CONTRIBUTIONS, IMPACT, AND POSITIVE LEGACY OF HBCUS IN BROADENING PARTICIPATION; 2) A COMMON THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK THAT EXPOSES INDIVIDUAL AND SYSTEMATIC VULNERABILITIES WHILE DEVELOPING THE INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORTS NECESSARY TO PROMOTE SUCCESS AND RETENTION OF STUDENTS; AND 3) RESEARCH TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS THAT WILL INFORM EDUCATION REFORM. SPECIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS WILL EMANATE FROM A CORE RESEARCH HUB CONSISTING OF THREE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS - MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, SPELMAN COLLEGE AND VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY - AS WELL AS FIFTY OTHER HBCU PARTICIPANTS. THE CENTER WILL CONDUCT CONVERGENCE RESEARCH USING A COMMUNITY-BASED PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH MODEL TO INCLUDE EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER THAT WILL ALLOW FOR THE SHARING OF DATA AND RESULTS TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES ACROSS THE HBCU NETWORK. THE CENTER WILL CONDUCT OUTREACH TO ALL ACCREDITED HBCUS WITH EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STRATEGIES UTILIZING ONLINE NEWSLETTERS, WHITE PAPERS, LISTSERVS, BLOGS, WEBINARS, AND WORKSHOP-BASED CONFERENCES. A ROBUST EXTERNAL EVALUATION WILL MONITOR AND ASSESS PROGRESS ON ALL OBJECTIVES, PROVIDING BOTH FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT OF ALL CENTER ACTIVITIES. COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
BPC-AE: INSTITUTE FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS IN COMPUTING SCIENCES (IAAMCS) NATIONAL NETWORK -THIS AWARD EXTENDS THE BPC ALLIANCE DIVERSIFYING LEADERSHIP IN THE PROFESSORIATE (LEAP). LEAP IS LED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO AND ADDRESSES THE CRITICAL CHALLENGE OF INCREASING THE DIVERSITY OF COMPUTING FACULTY AT RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES AS A WAY TO INCREASE DIVERSITY ACROSS THE FIELD. TO MEET THIS GOAL, LEAP SUPPORTS INSTITUTIONAL COHORTS STRATEGICALLY DESIGNED TO BUILD COMMUNITY AMONG SIMILAR INSTITUTION TYPES AND IDENTIFY KEY PRACTICES IN SUPPORTING STUDENTS UNDERREPRESENTED IN COMPUTING ACROSS DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXTS. THIS EXTENSION WILL BUILD UPON LESSONS LEARNED BY THESE COHORTS AND CONTINUE TO REFINE STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE COMPUTING PROFESSORIATE. THE EXTENSION WILL ALSO ESTABLISH AN AFFILIATES PROGRAM TO SHARE BEST PRACTICES AND LESSONS LEARNED ACROSS LEAP COHORTS AND NEW AFFILIATE MEMBER INSTITUTIONS. THE PROBLEM THE LEAP ALLIANCE ADDRESSES IS STARK AND STRAIGHT-FORWARD: ONLY 5.3% OF THE FACULTY (TENURED, TENURE TRACK, TEACHING, RESEARCH, INSTRUCTORS, AND POSTDOCS) AT PHD-GRANTING UNIVERSITIES ARE FROM THE FOLLOWING UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES: BLACK OR AFRICAN-AMERICAN, HISPANIC, AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE, OR NATIVE HAWAIIAN/PACIFIC ISLANDER. THIS EXTENSION BUILDS UPON THE INITIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND LESSONS LEARNED AND ENTAILS TWO MAIN ACTIVITIES: (1) THE CONTINUATION AND REFINEMENT OF THE LEAP ALLIANCE STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING DIVERSITY IN THE COMPUTING PROFESSORIATE AND (2) THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN AFFILIATES PROGRAM FOR STRONG CROSS-DISSEMINATION OF GOOD PRACTICES AND LESSONS LEARNED BETWEEN THE FOUR COHORTS AND THE AFFILIATE MEMBER INSTITUTIONS. THE SHARED PURPOSE AND BROAD VISION OF THE LEAP ALLIANCE ENTAILS THREE MAIN APPROACHES: (1) INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF PHD GRADUATES FROM THE INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE THE TOP PRODUCERS OF COMPUTING FACULTY; (2) INCREASE THE EXPOSURE OF ACADEMIC CAREERS AT THE INSTITUTIONS THAT ALREADY HAVE GOOD DIVERSITY IN THEIR PHD GRADUATES; AND (3) INCREASE THE RETENTION OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES AT THE INSTITUTIONS THAT SEND STUDENTS TO DOCTORAL PROGRAMS. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, LOCATED IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, IS THE LARGEST INDEPENDENT, FULLY ACCREDITED, HISTORICALLY BLACK LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEN IN THE U.S. THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, THE COLLEGE HAS SUCCESSFULLY TRAINED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CAREERS. FURTHERMORE, MOREHOUSE RANKS AS ONE OF THE TOP UNDERGRADUATE PRODUCERS OF BLACKS WITH DOCTORAL AND MEDICAL DEGREES IN THE COUNTRY. IN ADDITION, THE COLLEGE CONFERS MORE BACCALAUREATE DEGREES UPON AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN THAN ANY OTHER INSTITUTION IN THE WORLD. OVER THE PAST THREE DECADES, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE HAS HAD THE VISION TO SUPPORT THE TRAINING OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO DIVERSIFY THE PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. PHSI WAS CREATED SIX (6) YEARS AFTER PROJECT IMHOTEP (1988) THROUGH A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) & PREVENTION TO SUPPORT PROJECT IMHOTEP WHICH WAS ESTABLISH IN 1982 WITHIN CDC’S DIVISION OF HIV, STD & TB PREVENTION. PHSI WAS DESIGNED TO TRAIN UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERSERVED MINORITY STUDENTS IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES. FOR THE PAST 41 YEARS, THE PRIMARY GOAL OF PROJECT IMHOTEP HAS BEEN TO PREPARE UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS FOR ENTRY INTRO GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND CAREERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH. TO CONTINUE ITS MISSION, THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE IS SUBMITTING A GRANT PROPOSAL TO FUND THE LEWIS SCHOLARS IMHOTEP (LSI) PROGRAM UNDER CDC-RFA-CD22-2201: CATEGORY A - CDC JOHN R. LEWIS UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM: EXPOSURE OF UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND POSTGRADUATES TO MINORITY HEALTH, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS. THE LEWIS SCHOLARS IMHOTEP PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS THE HEALTHY PEOPLE 2030 OVERARCHING GOAL TO ACHIEVE HEALTH EQUITY, ELIMINATE HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF ALL GROUPS BY INCREASING THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF WELL-TRAINED PROFESSIONALS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS INTO THE PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. THE LSI PROGRAM AIMS TO: (A) IMPROVE STUDENT ACADEMIC SKILLS AND INCREASE INTEREST IN PUBLIC HEALTH; (B) INCREASED AWARENESS OF PUBLIC HEALTH CAREER OPPORTUNITIES; (C) INCREASE KNOWLEDGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH CONCEPTS, INCLUDING HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH; AND (D) IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF PROFESSIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. OVER 2000 STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN ONE OR MORE OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES PROVIDED BY PHSI AND 77% OF THESE STUDENTS HAVE EARNED OR ARE PURSUING AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN PUBLIC HEALTH AND/OR IN BIOMEDICAL HEALTH (DUFFUS, W., TRAWICK, C., MOONESINGHE R., TOLA J., TRUMAN B. & DEAN, H. (2014)). THE MAJORITY OF THE PARTICIPANTS (55%) ARE CURRENTLY WORKING IN A PUBLIC HEALTH POSITION INCLUDING: FEDERAL (23%), STATE (6%), LOCAL (5%), ACADEMIA (23%), NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (21%), AND OTHER (35%). THUS, PHSI HAS A SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINORITY STUDENTS REPRESENTED IN THE AREAS OF BIOSTATISTICS, EPIDEMIOLOGY, AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH.

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE JOHN R. LEWIS UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM - PROJECT ABSTRACT SUMMARY MOREHOUSE COLLEGE IS APPLYING FOR CATEGORY A: CDC JOHN R. LEWIS UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM: EXPOSURE OF UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND POSTGRADUATES TO MINORITY HEALTH, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, LOCATED IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, IS THE LARGEST INDEPENDENT, FULLY ACCREDITED, HISTORICALLY BLACK LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEN IN THE U.S. THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, THE COLLEGE HAS SUCCESSFULLY TRAINED UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CAREERS. FURTHERMORE, MOREHOUSE RANKS AS ONE OF THE TOP UNDERGRADUATE PRODUCERS OF BLACKS WITH DOCTORAL AND MEDICAL DEGREES IN THE COUNTRY. IN ADDITION, THE COLLEGE CONFERS MORE BACCALAUREATE DEGREES UPON AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN THAN ANY OTHER INSTITUTION IN THE WORLD. OVER THE PAST THREE DECADES, MOREHOUSE COLLEGE HAS HAD THE VISION TO SUPPORT THE TRAINING OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO DIVERSIFY THE PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. PHSI WAS CREATED SIX (6) YEARS AFTER PROJECT IMHOTEP (1988) THROUGH A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) & PREVENTION TO SUPPORT PROJECT IMHOTEP WHICH WAS ESTABLISH IN 1982 WITHIN CDC’S DIVISION OF HIV, STD & TB PREVENTION. PHSI WAS DESIGNED TO TRAIN UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERSERVED MINORITY STUDENTS IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES. FOR THE PAST 41 YEARS, THE PRIMARY GOAL OF PROJECT IMHOTEP HAS BEEN TO PREPARE UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS FOR ENTRY INTRO GRADUATE PROGRAMS AND CAREERS IN PUBLIC HEALTH. TO CONTINUE ITS MISSION, THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE IS SUBMITTING A GRANT PROPOSAL TO FUND THE LEWIS SCHOLARS IMHOTEP (LSI) PROGRAM UNDER CDC-RFA-CD22-2201: CATEGORY A - CDC JOHN R. LEWIS UNDERGRADUATE PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM: EXPOSURE OF UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND POSTGRADUATES TO MINORITY HEALTH, PUBLIC HEALTH, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS. THE LEWIS SCHOLARS IMHOTEP PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS THE HEALTHY PEOPLE 2030 OVERARCHING GOAL TO ACHIEVE HEALTH EQUITY, ELIMINATE HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF ALL GROUPS BY INCREASING THE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF WELL-TRAINED PROFESSIONALS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS INTO THE PUBLIC HEALTH WORKFORCE. THE LSI PROGRAM AIMS TO: (A) IMPROVE STUDENT ACADEMIC SKILLS AND INCREASE INTEREST IN PUBLIC HEALTH; (B) INCREASED AWARENESS OF PUBLIC HEALTH CAREER OPPORTUNITIES; (C) INCREASE KNOWLEDGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH CONCEPTS, INCLUDING HEALTH DISPARITIES, AND SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH; AND (D) IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING OF PROFESSIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. OVER 2000 STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN ONE OR MORE OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES PROVIDED BY PHSI AND 77% OF THESE STUDENTS HAVE EARNED OR ARE PURSUING AN ADVANCED DEGREE IN PUBLIC HEALTH AND/OR IN BIOMEDICAL HEALTH (DUFFUS, W., TRAWICK, C., MOONESINGHE R., TOLA J., TRUMAN B. & DEAN, H. (2014)). THE MAJORITY OF THE PARTICIPANTS (55%) ARE CURRENTLY WORKING IN A PUBLIC HEALTH POSITION INCLUDING: FEDERAL (23%), STATE (6%), LOCAL (5%), ACADEMIA (23%), NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (21%), AND OTHER (35%). THUS, PHSI HAS A SUBSTANTIAL IMPACT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINORITY STUDENTS REPRESENTED IN THE AREAS OF BIOSTATISTICS, EPIDEMIOLOGY, AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH.
